The QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer is designed for improved elution of nucleic acids from QIAcard FTA Elute formats. DNA eluted using the QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer is immediately suitable for sequencing and PCR applications such as qPCR and RT-qPCR as well as subsequent STR analysis (standard amplification).
Easy sample collection of cellular material from saliva, buccal cells, blood and other biological material is important for downstream DNA analysis. Sample collection products must facilitate safe and easy transport of this material to the lab and deliver reliable long-term storage of samples for repeat testing. All the FTA paper-based products in the QIAGEN portfolio have longer storage data than any other similar product. Find out more here about sample collection with QIAcard FTA products and accessories.

FTA (Flinders Technology Associates) is a chemically coated cellulose matrix, capable of lysing cells upon contact and denaturing proteins. Sample materials include (but are not limited to) blood, buccal cells, tissue, cultured cells, microorganisms and plant tissue.
The QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer allows for the rapid elution of nucleic acids from QIAcard FTA Elute formats. Stored purified DNA bound to the matrix is eluted in 30 minutes. Nucleic acids from blood or saliva samples can be eluted in less than 40 minutes. The QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer simplifies the elution protocol and protects the nucleic acids from degradation. Moreover, the buffer is designed for combined treatment with Proteinase K and QIAshredder (not included; for ordering information, see cat. no. 19131 and cat. no. 79656). Use of the QIAshredder basket is recommended to improve the elution efficiency. Proteinase K treatment improves the efficiency of lysis and elution for challenging sample material such as biological fluids (blood, saliva, etc.).
Applied sample material (such as blood, buccal cells, tissue, cultured cells, microorganisms or plant tissue) is lyzed upon contact with QIAcard FTA Elute formats. QIAcard FTA Elute formats are suitable for room temperature (15–25°C) shipment and preservation. The cards are designed for subsequent elution of released and nucleic acids from the card matrix. The QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer simplifies the elution protocol, protects the nucleic acids from degradation and is designed for combined treatment with Proteinase K to improve the efficiency of lysis and elution.
Sample material is applied to the printed circle area on an appropriate QIAcard FTA Elute format. When completely dried, the cards can be stored in a dry environment until ready to use. Punches from QIAcard FTA Elute formats are placed in a 2 ml microcentrifuge tube and washed with TE−4 buffer. The QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer procedure, with tailored protocols for purified nucleic acids or cells and biological fluids, is shown in the flowchart " QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer procedure".
The combination of QIAcard FTA Elute formats for easy sample collection, room temperature preservation and the use of QIAcard FTA Elute Buffer enable efficient nucleic acid elution for downstream applications such as:
Achieve rapid elution of nucleic acids from purified DNA in 30 minutes and from blood or saliva in less than 40 minutes.
